A core is a used pallet that needs repair before it can carry a load again: broken boards, a cracked stringer, missing pieces. Recyclers repair cores, strip them for parts or grind them.
Cores and broken pallets are the part of a pile that usually costs money to move rather than earning it, which is why the Load Line asks for them separately.
Where they turn up
Every dock. They build up wherever pallets are stored outside or handled roughly.
